Welcome! Post your questions and comments about Poly-Modeling with 3dsMax here

Hello everyone,
I have decided to move the support for my book to this location here on blogspot. The forum proved to be to hard to maintain, I feel this will be a better venue for the questions and answers. With that said, I hope anyone with questions will post here, and follow the blog. Being quite new to the blog system myself I am sure there may be some kinks we will need to iron out, so please be patient if things aren't running perfectly at first.

Thanks!

Todd

i always get stuck on what to model, since its more like a hobby and I dont use 3ds max much in my job (I'm planning to quit soon). so you have any advice on stuff to model that is good for beginners to handle? (tried a car and bike but it proved too much).

Hey Ugo,

when starting out, model anything you can think of, things on your desk, things you see everyday, anything. I know you have the book, so I would say get outside of your comfort zone, try using some of the more difficult techniques found in the book and implementing them into a model. I am not saying you have to take on a huge undertaking like a car, but rather that you should try making a simple object with some complex elements to it. I hope that makes sense, model whatever you like, just keep in mind you aren't bound to the rules that occur in reality. Try, fail sometimes, try again, and learn as you go. Failing is a huge part of the process, doing it better the next time is what you get out of not succeeding every time you model something.
Stop using the time talking and thinking about it,and start doing it. :) Practice is the answer Ugo, anything you want to do well requires practice.

I hope my words make sense, and how about trying to post your progress here, I want to see if the blog is a good format for people to post on.

Thanks!

Todd

Good work Ugo! Apparently images cant be added to blog comments. Can you do me a favor and try posting it as a link? Here is some info:
hot to add a link to a blog comment

If this works can youp also post an image of your mesh without and turbosmooth so i can tell you how to fix any issues?

Thanks!

Todd

Hey Ugo,

you are doing pretty good, but you need to think about the spacing of your polygons. Having groups of edges that are tight, right next to large areas without edges is why you are getting pinching. Start looking at wireframes of people that make good models....polygons are evenly spaced. Your model has great potential just try to even the spacing next time.

Keep posting, but link the images like you did earlier so people can click the link.

Thanks!

Todd

Hi Todd! I just started with your book, together with another great one (Essentials CG lightning techniques). As I'm used to work with geometries (althought I use beziers a lot in Illustrator), I'm experiencing difficulties in knowing how to draw those splines, like, for example, in figure 2.2. My thought was to make a 6 endpointing star and outline it to make the inside. The problem is how to create the lines to close the vertices. I tried to automatic-welding the points, but as it is a closed form, of course it didn't attached. You made that 3D spline network on figure 2.4 and I really don't know how to build this forms. I know sounds stupid, but it is all new to me. Can you tutorial me on that? Many thanks!

Hey Sergio,

Figure 2.2 in the book is the nose for patch modeling. The network in figure 2.4 is outlined in the text, give it a couple of tries as that should work fine if you follow along. Its hard to diagnose a problem with the info provided, maybe show me your own example so I can tell you how to fix it.

Thanks!

HI.. AM really glad ! because I read that book... but is there any second edition? to wait for?
and is it necessary to use turbo smooth modifier in any project ? I saw my self I can not do any thing with out turbo smooth or mesh smooth modifier .... is it right or not?
and thanks

No 2nd edition in the works yet, I may do a follow up in the future. You dont need to use turbosmooth in everything you do, I think I outlined that in the book briefly. If it looks good without then you dont need to use it :)

Hi Todd,

I'm working my way through the Kindle edition of your book and have to mention a couple of things that are really bugging me. First, the illustrations are way to small and low-res to follow some of the fine details in your tutorials especially when it comes to picking specific edges and verts in many of the examples. It would really help if they were bigger and more detailed. I'm using a hi-res monitor so it must be even worse viewing them on an actual Kindle! Second, there should be a note in the book about all the hyperlinks being broken. Only by finding your website did I see your message about the relocation of the files. Other than these two problems, I'm really enjoying your book. Will you be doing any classes in NYC again anytime soon?

Thanks,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
I apologize for the difficulties with the Kindle version of the book, when I originally put this together in 2008 Kindle was in it's infancy and we had not discussed making this publication available for that venue. I was unaware that the book would be available for Kindle as I would think the very issue you are having would be a good reason not to release in that format. I dont have much control over what the publisher does with the content, I wish I could help but that is beyond my role in the process.
The links changing is on me the publisher has taken steps to make buyers aware of the changes, however to do so in print would require a new printing which won't happen till existing inventory has been exhausted. This blog and my site both address the change in file location hopefully others will find them when searching for files.
I havent been approached to do another class, but that is never off the table. If time permits and the opportunity arises I will certainly do another class.

thanks for the post!

Todd
